Meta Box Custom Fields for Structured WordPress Sites
In short
Meta Box is the custom fields framework IPSense relies on when a WordPress site holds structured information, like product specifications, project portfolios, doctor profiles or business listings. It adds custom post types, 40+ field types, relationships and custom database tables. It has 500,000+ active installs, and it's part of the core stack behind every Smart Suburbs directory site.

What is Meta Box?
Here's the thing about a normal WordPress page: it's one big block of text, and business data rarely fits neatly into that. A product has a grade, a pack size and certifications. A listing has an address, timings and a category. Meta Box lets us store each of those as a proper field. That way, the data can be shown consistently, filtered, searched and turned into structured data for search engines.
Meta Box is made by eLightUp. The free plugin includes 40+ field types, repeatable groups and free extensions for post types, term meta, user meta and settings pages. Premium extensions add a visual builder, views, relationships, front-end submission and custom tables. Recent releases also added WordPress Block Bindings and Abilities support. From what I've seen, that usually makes it easier for AI tools to read your data through the WordPress MCP Adapter.
What Meta Box can do
Custom post types and 40+ field types
You can model real business entities, like products, projects, locations or listings, with exactly the fields they need.
Relationships and views
Link products to industries or listings to localities, then show them using templates.
Custom tables
Store large volumes of field data in dedicated tables. In most cases, that means faster queries on big sites.
Developer-friendly and AI-ready
It uses native WordPress meta, hooks and the REST API. It also supports Abilities, so AI assistants can get to your data through the WordPress MCP Adapter.
How IPSense uses Meta Box
We use Meta Box in our own business first. The Smart Suburbs network of hyperlocal directories runs on ListingPro with Meta Box Pro, which holds the structured listing data: categories, locations and business details. For B2B clients, we take the same approach with product catalogues and specification pages, so each product carries consistent, schema-ready data.
Here's how it usually goes:
- Map the entities and fields the business actually needs, such as products, specs and industries.
- Build post types, fields and relationships in Meta Box, with templates for display.
- Output the data as structured schema, then test filters, search and speed.
Where Meta Box shines, and what to plan for
Where it shines
- Proven at scale, including our own directory network
- Very flexible data modelling with relationships
- Custom tables for large sites
- Clean developer approach and AI-ready via Abilities
What to plan for
- It needs planning, because a poor field model is often hard to change later
- You'll need premium extensions for the visual builder and views
- It's more technical than a simple page builder
Is Meta Box right for your business?
A good fit if…
- Your site holds catalogues, listings, profiles or projects
- You want content that's consistent, filterable and schema-ready
- You are planning a directory or portal
We reach for another tool when:
- You only need a few simple pages
- You need front-end posting by users. In that case, pair it with WP User Frontend Pro
- You want a design tool rather than a data tool. Brizy or ElementsKit often suit that better

Meta Box: frequently asked questions
Is Meta Box better than ACF?
Both are mature. Meta Box offers more field types in its free plugin, custom tables and a modular extension system; ACF is simpler for very small projects. We choose Meta Box for data-heavy sites.
Is Meta Box free?
Yes, the core plugin and several extensions are free on WordPress.org. Premium extensions and the Meta Box AIO bundle add more features.
Can Meta Box build a business directory?
Yes. Custom post types, fields, relationships and front-end submission cover most directory needs. The Smart Suburbs directories use Meta Box Pro.
Does Meta Box help SEO?
Indirectly. Structured fields make it easy to show consistent information and output accurate schema markup.
Can Meta Box store data in its own tables?
Yes. The MB Custom Table extension stores fields in custom database tables for performance.
